World Wetlands Day celebrated in Bhutan

The Watershed Management Division under the Department of Forests and Park Services organizes “World Wetlands Day” each year as the annual wetland advocacy program in the country. World Wetlands Day is celebrated on 2nd February, marking the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on wetlands in 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar. Bhutan became a contracting party to the Ramsar Convention on 7th September, 2012, joining hands in the conservation of wetlands. Wetlands in Bhutan include glaciers, lakes, rivers, springs, ponds, vernal pools, peat, marshes and predominantly water-logged areas. Wetlands are not only sources and storage tanks for water but a habitat for a rich biodiversity.

The theme for World Wetlands Day, 2018 is “Wetland for a Sustainable Urban Future” and the day was celebrated with the youth in the capital to raise awareness on the importance / value of wetlands and involved cycling, running and cleaning campaign. The event was celebrated at the Ecological Park located near the Youth Development Fund in Thimphu which is a home to several bird species and plants. WMD along with Thimphu Mountain Biking Club (TMBC) organized this event and distributed prizes to the position holders.
