Social Forestry Day celebrated across the Country

June 2nd  is celebrated annually as the Social Forestry Day coinciding with the coronation anniversary of our beloved Fourth Druk Gyalpo. The Day was celebrated throughout the country by the Department of Forests and Park Services. His Majesty The King joined the Nation in celebrating the Day by planting a Jangchub Shing (Ficus religiosa) at Damphu Central School, in Tsirang.

More than 75,000 seedlings have been distributed to and planted across the nation by schools, institutions and community forest groups.The field Divisions with support from local governments and volunteers have carried out new plantations and are also refilling earlier plantations.

In Thimphu, the Department coordinated and supported the tree planting at various sites. 300 people led by the Hon’ble Agriculture Secretary , and including officials from the Ministry, Desuups, volunteers from Scan Cafe Pvt. Ltd, Taj Tashi, individual volunteers and foresters planted about 1,500 saplings. The Secretary in his address highlighted the significance of the day and thanked the volunteers who turned up to help in greening our bare slopes and contribute to maintaining the constitutional mandate of 60% forest cover for all times to come. In addition, about 80 volunteers of a youth group lead by foresters planted about 800 willow cuttings along both banks of Wangchu between Tarayana building and the cremation ground.

Simarly, Natural Resources Development Corporation Ltd., officials and staff from the Bank of Bhutan Ltd. and the Druk Air Corporation Ltd. planted more than 4500 tree seedlings over 4 hectares in the fire burnt area at Debsiphakha. The Bhutan Power Corporation has also carried out plantation of about 300 seedlings at Tsalumarphey.

Besides the above plantations, more than 1000 seedlings were distributed to various schools, institutions and individuals for the day as per records with Khasadrapchu Nursery.
