National REDD+ Strategy & Action Plan of Bhutan launched

Coinciding with the World Rangers Day 2020, the Watershed Management Division (REDD+ Secretariat) launched the National REDD+ Strategy & Action Plan of Bhutan. The launching ceremony was graced by Lyonpo Yeshey Penjor, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture & Forests (MoAF), Royal Government of Bhutan along with Hon’ble Members of the Parliament, Departmental Heads of MoAF and other invited dignitaries.

REDD+ stands for reducing emission from Deforestation and forest degradation and the role of sustainable management of forests, conservation and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. It is a mechanism under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) designed to provide financial support for efforts put in by developing countries to reduce deforestation and forest degradation and enhance carbon sequestration. However, for countries to participate in the REDD+ mechanism, the National REDD+ Strategy, National Forest Monitoring System, National Forest Reference Emission Level and Safeguard Information System have to be developed as part of the REDD+ Readiness.

As a preparation towards REDD+ implementation, the Department of Forests & Park Services through Watershed Management Division developed the National REDD+ Strategy & Action Plan. The strategy was developed through a participatory approach involving all stakeholders across the Country.

The National REDD+ Strategy provides a long-term vision and Policies and Measures to address the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation and enhance forest conservation and sustainable forest management. The implementation of the Strategy will contribute to the preservation of Bhutan’s rich forest biodiversity, enhance livelihoods, and uphold the carbon neutrality pledge of the Country. The development and finalization of the National REDD+ Strategy & Action Plan demonstrate the excellent progress that Bhutan has made in the preparatory process towards REDD+ implementation. A copy of the Strategy document can be availed from the Watershed Management Division office.
