Basic GIS Training, 15th to 19th September, 2025

The Forests Monitoring and Information Division (FMID), Department of Forests and Park Services (DoFPS), conducted a five-day training titled “Empowering Women with GIS Applications in Forestry” from 15th to 19th September 2025 at the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Forestry Research and Training (UWIFoRT), Lamai Gonpa, Bumthang. The main objective of the training was to equip women foresters with the practical skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with particular focus on forest mapping, spatial planning and spatial data-driven decision making for sustainable forest management and conservation.

The training combined theoretical sessions with hands-on exercises using QGIS, an open-source GIS software, to build participants’ technical capacity and confidence in using geospatial tools for forestry-related tasks. The training was attended by participants from 14 Divisional Forest Offices, 10 Protected Areas, and 4 Functional Divisions under the Department with a total of 31 participants (27 females and 4 males).

This training was funded by IKI Living Landscape Project, as part of its ongoing support for capacity building and gender-inclusive approaches in environmental conservation and climate action.
