Social Forestry Day

Message from the Hon’ble Minister
Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MoENR),
On the Occasion of Social Forestry Day – 2nd June 2026

“On this auspicious day, I extend my warmest greetings and heartfelt wishes to all Bhutanese citizens as we observe Social Forestry Day, which coincides with the Coronation Day of our beloved Fourth Druk Gyalpo, His Majesty the King Jigme Singye Wangchuck.”

Every year, 2nd June arrives not just as a DATE on the CALANDER, but as a reminder of a vision that quietly transformed Bhutan’s forests and landscapes. Today, we are honouring this royal vision with gratitude and responsibility, by protecting, restoring, and nurturing the forests that sustain us all.

Bhutan’s story is unique. Our forests, mountains, and rivers have always been cared for not only by policy, but by tradition, wisdom, and the deep respect of our forefathers for nature. This harmony between people and environment is what makes our nation’s path so special.

This day is nationally significant as it honors His Majesty’s visionary leadership and Bhutan’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship. Under His Majesty’s profound guidance, the Social Forestry Program launched in 1979 became a turning point in our history. It empowered communities to plant trees, manage forest resources sustainably, and take active ownership of Bhutan’s natural heritage.

As we gather to commemorate this important occasion, we are reminded that Bhutan’s strength has always rested on a deep and enduring relationship with nature. Our identity as a nation is shaped by values of balance, compassion, and responsibility—where development is pursued not at the cost of nature, but in harmony with it. These principles, enshrined in our development philosophy of Gross National Happiness and embedded in the Constitution, continue to guide our collective journey.

This year’s observance of Social Forestry Day under the theme “Plant Together, Restore Forever, Secure Our Future” comes at a time when the urgency of environmental protection has never been greater than any time before. Rising climate risks, increasing pressure on ecosystems, and the gradual loss of biodiversity remind us that restoration is not a choice, but dire necessity. It is also a call to action—especially for our younger generation—to become active stewards of Bhutan’s natural heritage.

Bhutan’s forests are among our most precious national assets. They are not merely stands of trees, but complex and living ecosystems that sustain every aspect of life. They regulate our climate, protect our watersheds, support rural livelihoods, store carbon, conserve biodiversity, and provide spaces of cultural and spiritual importance. With nearly 70 percent forest cover, our country stands as a living example of sustained national commitment, guided by visionary leadership and strengthened through community participation.

On this occasion, we are reminded that conservation is most effective when it is collective. Schools, local communities, institutions, and individuals all have a vital role to play. Tree planting is one of the simplest yet most powerful acts of restoration—it represents continuity, resilience, and hope. Each tree planted today becomes part of a larger effort to restore degraded landscapes and strengthen ecological balance for the future.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources continues to prioritize sustainable forest management through strengthened community forestry, expanded restoration initiatives, and integrated nature-based solutions into national development planning. At the same time, we recognize the ongoing threats to our forest ecosystems, including illegal activities, habitat degradation, and the intensifying impacts of climate change. Addressing these challenges requires not only policy and programs but also shared vigilance and commitment from every section of the society.

On behalf of the Ministry, I would like to express sincere appreciation to all foresters, communities, partners, and volunteers for their continued commitment to environmental sustainability and integrity to ensure Bhutan’s green legacy.

Tashi Delek and Happy Social Forestry Day!
