“Empowering Farmers, Safeguarding Wildlife”: JSWNP Donates Power Tillers to Local Communities

On 13th September 2025, Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park (JSWNP) handed over power tillers to five gewogs in its landscape. The event was graced by Dasho Dzongdag of Trongsa Dzongkhag as the chief guest, alongside sector heads from the Dzongkhag administration and local government leaders.

The power tillers, valued at Nu. 2.526 million, were procured through donor funding under the IUCN–Integrated Tiger Habitat Conservation Project (ITHCP). This initiative is part of JSWNP’s broader effort to reduce human–tiger conflict (HTC). By equipping farmers with modern agricultural tools, the park aims to compensate communities for tiger depredation, enhance farming efficiency, and minimize the need for harmful retaliatory measures against wildlife.

The power tillers have been distributed to five Gewogs: Tangsibji (6), Langthel (5), and Korphu (6) under Trongsa Dzongkhag; Trong (3) under Zhemgang Dzongkhag; and Athang (7) under Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhag. Further distribution will take place at the Chiwog/village level in areas most affected by HTC within Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park.

These initiatives reflect JSWNP’s commitment to strengthening community resilience against agricultural challenges while ensuring the long-term survival of Bhutan’s tiger population. By combining livelihood support, modern tools and awareness, the park continues to build a model where people and wildlife thrive together.
