Bhutanese Rangers Amongst the winners during International Ranger Award

A team of Rangers led by Chief Forestry Officer from Sarpang Forest Division under the Department of Forests and Park Services are amongst the winners during the prestigious 3rd International Ranger Award 2023. The Annual International Ranger Award recognizes the remarkable work of rangers in protected areas around the world and the team from Bhutan was awarded for their critical role in protecting the State Reserved Forest Land (SRFL), protected landscape (Biological Corridor No. 03), and the endangered wildlife of southern Bhutan.

Rangers of Bhutan play an important role in protecting the nature and wildlife from the multifarious natural and anthropogenic threats and ensure that ecological benefits are sustainably accrued without compromising the needs of the future generation. While rangers are deemed as protector of the nature and wildlife, they also play a critical role in enhancing the livelihoods of our people through forestry service delivery.

“At the risk of their lives and comfort, the Rangers work tirelessly to safeguard the diversity of life and preserve the beauty of our natural world. Their role is more vital now than ever before, as we recognize the importance of nature for our health, well-being, and the sustainability of our planet.” His Excellency the Minister for Minister of Energy and Natural Resources remarked. “It gives me a great sense of pride to see Rangers from my country, are amongst the winners of this year’s award. The award is a testament to the dedicated work our rangers do.”

The Sarpang team winning the prestigious award is an indication that the global community recognizes the roles that Bhutanese rangers play in securing the nature and its protected landscapes. Back in 2021, a Bhutanese lady ranger Ms. Norbu Yangdon from Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary also received a “Special Mention” during the first International Ranger Award.

The award is hosted by the IUCN and the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, in collaboration with the International Ranger Federation, Re:wild, Conservation Allies, Universal Ranger Support Alliance, IUCN US and WWF Tigers Alive Initiative, to improve rangers’ capabilities, raise awareness about the critical role they play in conservation efforts, and help share rangers’ unique stories and perspectives.
